The bar was made
for men who spent
their Friday nights with whiskey
My hips persuaded
them to spend
their twenty dollar bills on me
They were crass
and they were loud
but I’d grown up with men that way
It’s the dull ones who
seemed all the same
that I really couldn’t take

I saw him first
through dim bar lights
and assorted shots of liquor
He had cufflinks
and a fatal grin
that made time and hearts beat quicker

We were married
one month later
on an island in the sea.
I knew that he
was trouble but
it was trouble that I needed

Still murder, drugs,
and mistresses
were not what I foresaw
I wanted out
but my cartel man
moved too quick for the law.

So I called in
a detective
who didn’t work by the book
With his suspect means
and his cunning sense
a month was all it took

For my hired man
to execute his plan
and ensure my husband’s death
I’ve a lonely bed
but I don’t regret
the haste of his last breath

Now my bird dog rents
the upper flat
and solves his cases right above me
with his special friend
I visit them
when there’s nothing good on TV

Bullets in the wall
bodies in the hall
and papers full of grass
Everyone knows
but even so
the coppers never dare to ask
